A Vegetarian Guide to Georgian Food (and How to Eat It)
One of the reasons is that Georgian food is a lot more vegetarian friendly than Turkish food. Georgians do incredible stuff with walnut, eggplant, mushroom and cheese. The latter 3 items being my all around favorite things in the world to eat so it’s no surprise I found Georgian food very much agreeable. They have this walnut paste thingy that was pretty close to the most incredible thing I’ve ever tasted. It’s like cheese, but lighter, nuttier… Sigh. I have to find it here in the States. But if you’re a cheese lover, you’ll like it here too. In fact, it’ll be hard to NOT eat cheese in Georgia. You’ll see what I mean when you see the list of vegetarian friendly Georgian foods I’ve made below. Khachapuri Think of pizza on steroids and what you get is khachapuri. Several regions in Georgia have their own versions of khachapuri but all involve lots of cheese. Some can seem overly cheesy (is there such a thing?) Megruli Khachapuri for example is cheese filled pie topped with more cheese. However I thought…
Lone Ranger-Georgia’s Only Female Park Ranger
Salome Idoidze, Ranger at Tusheti National Park When we meet, Salome leafs through a pile of photographs of her riding a horse against a backdrop of dramatic mountain scenery. “Last time I was in Tbilisi I saw an old leather horse whip I wanted to buy at Dry Bridge flea-market” she says grinning. “The guy wouldn’t sell it to me though, saying he didn’t believe I had a horse and that I was probably a sado-masochist! I brought these photos to show him so he’d sell me the whip” she adds, gurgling with laughter. Trendily-attired and looking even younger than her 23 years, some might struggle to picture Salome as a park ranger in the remote mountainous region of Tusheti, famous in Georgian folklore for its bridenappings and patriarchal social structure. “In the beginning, many people were amazed to see a female ranger” she says. “They often ask how a girl can go out to patrol the park with men. Sometimes we meet shepherds in the summer who are absolutely amazed to see me, since woman are not usually involved…
Racha – Georgian Switzerland
The summer of 2013 I spent in Racha – a mountainous region of Georgia, which is not very well-known among travelers. When it comes to mountains in Georgia, first names that come to mind are Svaneti, Gudauri or Bakuriani. But this time, let me tell you of Racha. Detailed information about this land, it’s maps, routes, etc, you can find in my LiveJournal. After the long road. Cities give place to grim mountains covered with forests. High in the mountains… Mountains and clouds. Layered rocks on the slopes of Chakhuri north pass. All the peaks around are built of layered rocks like this. View from the Chakhuri north pass. Strangely shaped rocks and peaks stand above the sea of clouds. Have not seen anything like this in Caucasus! At the base of these mountains there is a small glacier. We’ll be going there. This peak drew our special attention. Rock seems to be crumbling layer by layer during the centuries, so now the even areas make steps of different shape and height. Rusty colors add some flavor to them. Another…
